KYPHOPLASTY

KYPHOPLASTY

The goals of a kyphoplasty surgical procedure are designed to stop the pain caused by a spinal fracture, to stabilize the bone, and to restore some or all of the lost vertebral body height due to the compression fracture. Osteoporosis can cause severe damage and pain in the spine. Fortunately, kyphoplasty can restore strength to the spine to relieve your pain and improve your quality of life.

A kyphoplasty is a surgical pain management technique that involves the injection of a special cement into the bones of the spine. The kyphoplasty procedure can be used to repair fractures in the bones due to osteoporosis, cancer, or injury. After injection, the cement hardens, restoring the bones to their original shape while improving their strength. This treatment can help reduce pain, improve posture, and combat the other effects of vertebra damage.

  • How is a Kyphoplasty Performed?

The kyphoplasty procedure, although surgical, is a fairly simple injectable treatment. During the procedure, a small needle will be inserted into the bone, using a balloon-like device to restore its normal shape. Then, a cement solution will be injected into the bone, strengthening and repairing the treated area. The kyphoplasty treatment typically takes about an hour, but the treatment time can vary depending on the extent of treatment necessary.

  • What is Recovery Like After a Kyphoplasty?

After a kyphoplasty, patients are encouraged to take at least a day off of normal activities. Exercise, heavy lifting, and other strenuous activities should be avoided for at least a few days. You may notice some swelling, soreness or bruising in the treatment area, but these symptoms are to be expected and should fade within a few days of treatment.

  • What Kind of Results Can I Achieve from a Kyphoplasty?

After a kyphoplasty, you should notice reduced pain and improved strength in the spine. As a result, your posture and daily comfort should improve. The results from this treatment can be incredibly long-lasting, but if you are affected by a condition like osteoporosis, you may still experience gradual degeneration in the spine. During your initial visit, we will assess your condition to define the results you can expect from your kyphoplasty treatment.
